I had to find out their worth myself without the demands of the school room and thus, the power of finally achieving a level of literacy meant so much to me - in fact Iā€™d go so far as to say it is my greatest personal achievement - words have \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003epower \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eand understanding how to wield them even more so.Ā \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eI love the way words can be manipulated and ordered to bring dimension to how we explain life and our experience of it. From twenty seven letters an infinite amount of ways to express and explore ourselves opens up, something that is quite incredible when one stops to think about it.Ā \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eBecoming a lyricist came as a byproduct of being a useless instrumentalist and so, needing something else to fill my rapidly expanding desire to demonstrate myself creatively, I grabbed hold of songwriting as a means to that end. Oddly, however, in the beginning I wasnā€™t aware of how much the words would mean - I was young and largely interested in nothing more than getting in-front of an audience and making myself heard. Some called it arrogance, others confidence, I at the time didnā€™t think to call it anything - I had only my instincts to go on and they said ā€˜singā€™ so I did. Now, with the benefit of hindsight I realise that impulse was driven by blind optimism but also (if Iā€™m honest) a fear that if I couldnā€™t play the guitar, I would have to make the very best of what I had available. I never meant anyone any harm or felt a need to explain myself, I knew I would never attain the heights of my heroes Freddie Mercury, Ronnie Dio and David Bowie - how could I? They were aliens possessed of superhuman powers, all I had was an itch that compelled me blindly (at first) towards an unknown light - much like a moth to the flame. One thing for certain is that I actually never really cared what anyone thought, I simply believed my destiny lay somewhere between the stage lighting and the dream of writing the best songs I could.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe journey of discovering that I subsequently embarked upon was filled with words that cascaded through my head and ultimately became so demanding that they needed to come out. But it was a gradual climb, a process of learning that I still love - as is often said ā€˜everyday is a school dayā€™ and as if to qualify this, I do feel the need to write something everyday, if I donā€™t, I feel agitated, incomplete somehow. Writing the book became a need to finally put a comprehensive account of ā€˜whyā€™ and ā€˜howā€™ many of my songs came into being. That writing period made me realise how important the journey into being a writer is - it literally fills me up, makes me feel whole.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThis audio volume - a talking book if you will - is the next stage of discovery in that journey. To speak words is to bring them to life, to give dimension to the process. Words sound great, some more than others of course, but itā€™s the combinations that make all the difference. What has astounded me whilst going through the recording process of this collection is how much the spoken word can add to the story - you quite literally make words into physical things and the effect is really quite amazing.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eI read somewhere recently that human beings have no natural need for words and language, we are beasts of the field in our purest form and so only need to make guttural noises really (I've made a career of it), it is purely through evolution that we have developed vocal folds and the brain power to sift and arrange language. The need evolved largely as a way of warning each other of danger but also to announce our feelings through the sounds that resonate in our very beings. I think singers know this more than most because of the buzz - quite literally in our sinuses and chest cavity - we get when singing.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThis I can fully get behind, the human voice is something so special, so unique to us all that it should be celebrated as no two voices are the same, they are as unique as our fingerprints.Ā \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eI hope you enjoy listening to this CD as much as I did recording it. I have spent much of my life reeling from the trauma of school bullying that has affected my life in ways that are hard to describe - the depth of the damage was unknown to me until quite recently when I decided to get some help. Someone close to me recently commented on being bullied as ā€˜So that? Thatā€™s life isnā€™t it?ā€™ My reaction was one of astonishment - Unless you have felt the deep sense of worthlessness and shame that experience forces upon you, then how could you know? To dismiss an individual's struggles with a flippant comment like that is to diminish the true agony it brings. I guess this is part of the problem - at our core humans are selfish and lack real empathy - if itā€™s not happening to me, itā€™s not happening. It was so powerful that the urges drove me to fling myself wholehearted into the process. Rather frustratingly, the first wave of ideas - many of which were left over from previous projects - didnā€™t work. The songs were stilted and obvious, and I couldnā€™t get my head around why. It occurred to me that maybe I was trying too hard and also that the subject matter was - on the whole - unfocussed. With the benefit of hindsight I now know I was applying old rules to a new situation, my awakening (not the best phrase, but I think it does illustrate the way I was feeling) was presenting me with a new approach. Certainly my anger was diminished and my usual go-to mechanisms seemed out of date and somehow, irrelevant. So I dumped all the songs and went back to the drawing board.Ā \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eWhat emerged was a tidal-wave of fresh ideas, all of which were prompted by my new found focus and energy. For a three week period I couldnā€™t stop writing. One of the key things was a decision to record simple demoā€™s of anything I felt held reasonable merit - something I donā€™t usually do - the most I tend to do is dribble the idea onto my phone, but this time I felt a real need to record the songs in a raw format with all the lyrics written and melodies fully investigated and locked in. It proved to be a great way of finding the heart of the album. For those three weeks I stayed up long into the early hours perfecting the words and feeling the energy that that time of the day brings (Iā€™ve often felt the twilight hours to be the most creative time) and it was a mesmerising period of my life. The words flowed, I found the central narratives came easily and with a sharp focus on what it was I was saying. The subject matter felt honest and sparkling and allowed me to explore themes - many of which are pretty familiar such as love and loss - in greater depth and with a lightness of touch I hadnā€™t managed before.Ā \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eI quickly realised that the central theme of the album was about recovery. Much of that search centred on myself - may of the characters in my songs ā€˜Johnnyā€™ from Kickin Up Dust or the main protagonist in Donā€™t Pray For Me was in fact me - something I didnā€™t spot for years - whereas now, the needs were to talk about others and the relationships that Iā€™d formed and how they applied themselves to all of our lives. It is an interesting phrase, it means many things. In its rawest and most direct definition it is inherently a WARNING, a shout, a declaration or a written announcement. Secondly you can BE the Look Out, the one seeking something, taking care to make sure your eyes are open and observant, and thirdly itā€™s a place, an actual physical structure or possibly an imagined vantage point from where we observe and watch. It occurred to me that maybe I was trying too hard and also that the subject matter was - on the whole - unfocussed. With the benefit of hindsight I now know I was applying old rules to a new situation, my awakening (not the best phrase, but I think it does illustrate the way I was feeling) was presenting me with a new approach. Certainly my anger was diminished and my usual go-to mechanisms seemed out of date and somehow, irrelevant. So I dumped all the songs and went back to the drawing board.Ā \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eWhat emerged was a tidal-wave of fresh ideas, all of which were prompted by my new found focus and energy. For a three week period I couldnā€™t stop writing. One of the key things was a decision to record simple demoā€™s of anything I felt held reasonable merit - something I donā€™t usually do - the most I tend to do is dribble the idea onto my phone, but this time I felt a real need to record the songs in a raw format with all the lyrics written and melodies fully investigated and locked in. It proved to be a great way of finding the heart of the album. For those three weeks I stayed up long into the early hours perfecting the words and feeling the energy that that time of the day brings (Iā€™ve often felt the twilight hours to be the most creative time) and it was a mesmerising period of my life. The words flowed, I found the central narratives came easily and with a sharp focus on what it was I was saying. The subject matter felt honest and sparkling and allowed me to explore themes - many of which are pretty familiar such as love and loss - in greater depth and with a lightness of touch I hadnā€™t managed before.Ā \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eI quickly realised that the central theme of the album was about recovery. At the time I would never have admitted the pain I felt from losing my friends, friends that I had travelled the world with, made music with and genuinely loved as people. My big problem really was a lack of honesty and a weakness in my self esteem that drove me to make awkward choices and not speak my truth - if Iā€™d have had more savvy, more street smarts, more sense, I wouldnā€™t have let it ever get to the point of impending disaster - specifically I would have revealed certain individuals who were at the heart of the problem for what and who they were. I donā€™t believe in God, fate, luck or any of the other flights of fancy we seem to smother ourselves with as a race - no, to me, life in real terms is exciting enough and has mystery written into its very nature, so I donā€™t need a magic being in the sky to believe in - itā€™s utterly ridiculous as far as Iā€™m concerned. I have long believed that we are - in essence - alone in this world. Our very fabric, though created by our parents, is uniqueĀ  and it is by pure chance that we meet and find our partners - oddly this sense of individualism has always brought me immense comfort - I simply donā€™t need anything to make me feel alive or part of anything, because here I am!
